Mastering the Start Sequence
A beginner's guide to Rule 26 and the rhythm of the starting flags.
By the Book: Rule 26
In the Racing Rules of Sailing (RRS), the starting sequence is governed by Rule 26. It’s a precise countdown where visual signals (flags) take precedence over sound signals.
| Signal | Flag | Sound | Minutes to Start |
|---|---|---|---|
| Warning | Class Flag UP | 1 Blast | 5 |
| Preparatory | P, I, Z, or Black UP | 1 Blast | 4 |
| One-Minute | Prep Flag DOWN | 1 Long Blast | 1 |
| Start | Class Flag DOWN | 1 Blast | 0 |
The "Preparatory" Choice
The flag you raise at 4 minutes dictates the "penalty" for being over the line (OCS). As a new RO, start with Flag P. As you get more comfortable and the fleet gets more aggressive, you might move to Flag I or the Black Flag.
RO Pro Tip: The Visual Rule
Always remember: The flag is the law. If your horn fails but the flag goes up exactly on time, the sequence is valid. If the horn goes off but the flag is stuck, the timing is wrong. Focus on the flags first!
