The problem every starting line RO knows

Anyone who has stood on the signal boat as a Race Officer knows exactly what I'm talking about. At two minutes to the starting signal, the most demanding phase of the job begins: I need to hold a picture of the entire line at once, who's approaching, from which direction, at what speed, who's at risk of being OCS (On Course Side), and who's still clear. At the same time I'm recording what I'm observing, while also confirming the signal vessel itself hasn't dragged off position.

This isn't one task. It's several simultaneous demands, and every second spent locked into an eyepiece instead of reading the full picture is a second in which something critical can be missed.

This isn't just a personal challenge, it's one the rules themselves explicitly address. RRS 29.2 gives the race committee authority to signal a General Recall when it is unable to identify all boats that were on the course side of the line at the starting signal. In other words: partial identification isn't just an operational inconvenience, it's a scenario the rules themselves recognize as a real and recurring risk. There are documented discussions of race committees identifying only some of the OCS boats in a large fleet, with the outcome disputed as a result. That's precisely why the identification tool I use has to be reliable and fast, not "usually works," but works.

That's the exact problem that, after years working with a classic binocular, led me to the monocular, and I found it solves it directly.

Why a monocular, not a binocular?

The simple answer: one hand stays free, at all times.

While tracking the whole line area with the naked eye, scanning, assessing, spotting trends, my free hand is signaling, keying the radio. The moment I spot a boat closing on the line in a way that needs confirmation, and only then, I raise the 8x42 marine monocular to one eye, read the sail number, and lower it immediately.

This is the core point: I never lose the overall picture of the entire line while identifying a number. With a binocular, both hands are occupied and the second eye is blocked too, meaning that while I'm "inside" identifying one boat, I'm completely blind to everything else happening on the line. With a monocular, the lift is a short, targeted action, not a full mode switch.

Picture a start in a seaway, holding onto a shroud to keep your footing, that's where the difference between one free hand and two occupied hands stops being a matter of convenience and becomes a matter of being able to function at all.

This matters even more in big fleets. Official race management procedures, for example in Star Class fleets, direct line sighters to record continuously, without interruption, starting as early as 90 seconds before the starting signal, essentially the same process I run myself. The larger the fleet and the longer the line, the greater the load on that one "free" hand doing the recording, and the greater the advantage of a one-hand instrument becomes.

The built-in compass, an advantage I didn't plan for

An advantage I only discovered after I started using it: the compass built into the monocular. In the same lift of the instrument, in the same second I'm reading a sail number, I can also check the bearing to the starting mark to confirm the vessel hasn't dragged. It's not a separate action with a separate instrument, it's the same tool, the same hand movement.

This is exactly the kind of small detail that turns a piece of gear into a working tool that actually saves time and prevents errors on the water. It also sits naturally alongside the rest of a Race Officer's kit, the timer, the wind meter, the signals, covered in what a Race Officer actually needs on the water.

Range, why it works even on a long line

The lines I work typically run 300 to 400 metres. At that distance, 8x magnification delivers exactly the resolution needed to read numbers reliably, not so much that it narrows the field of view and amplifies hand shake, and not so little that reading becomes guesswork. It's the range where the monocular performs at its best, with no need for a tripod or additional stabilisation.

There's a solid reason moderate magnification is preferred at sea: the higher the magnification, the more any hand movement is amplified along with it, which is exactly what makes image stability drop in chop and swell, precisely the conditions in which I need the most reliable read.

What really sold me

The moment I understood the monocular was the right tool for me came during one specific start, when two boats closed on the line almost together, each from a different angle. With a binocular I would have had to choose: track one, or lose the other. With the monocular, I kept tracking both with my free eye and raised the instrument for a quick ID on each in turn, without losing either from sight.

This is exactly the scenario the rules warn against: when an RO fails to identify all relevant boats, the outcome can be a General Recall for the entire fleet, a harsh penalty for boats that started correctly, purely because identification wasn't complete. A tool that lets me identify every boat without losing the overall picture is precisely what prevents that outcome.

That's the moment I understood: this isn't just an optical instrument. It's a tool built for the way a starting line RO actually works. It belongs in the same kit as the rest of your race officer gear.
