Cooling Towel 2 Pack with Carry Pouch

The Windie Cooling Towel is a piece of high tech microfiber that holds water inside the weave and releases it slowly. As that water evaporates it pulls heat out of the fabric, so the towel sits several degrees below the air around it and feels cold on your skin. One side is printed in the Windie colours, the other is a soft mesh that sits against your neck. It measures 90 x 30 cm, long enough to wrap around your neck and tuck in, or to drape over your head under a cap. Each pack holds two towels in a reusable zip pouch, so a wet towel goes back in the bag without soaking your kit bag and without smelling by the end of the week. Made for sailors, race officers, coaches and anyone who spends a long hot day outdoors and cannot go inside.

FAQ

How does a cooling towel actually work?

It is evaporation, the same thing that makes you feel cold when you get out of the water on a windy day. The microfiber holds a lot of water in its weave and releases it slowly. Turning water into vapour takes energy, and that energy comes out of the towel and out of your skin, so the fabric sits several degrees below the air temperature. There are no chemicals, no gel and nothing to run out. When the towel dries out it stops working, and the moment you wet it again it starts working again.

How long does it stay cold and what do I do when it warms up?

Around thirty minutes from each activation, depending on how hot and how windy it is. When it starts to feel warm, hold it by both ends and snap it hard through the air a few times. That pushes fresh air through the fibres and it turns cold again. If it has dried out completely, wet it, wring out the excess and snap it. One towel will carry you through a full day on the water.

Can I use sea water?

Yes, and on a boat that is usually what you have. It cools exactly the same way. Salt stays behind in the fabric as the water evaporates, so rinse the towel in fresh water at the end of the day, otherwise it dries stiff and salty. If you have fresh water on board, use it.

Will it smell if I put it away wet?

The pouch it comes in is made for exactly this. It is reusable and it breathes, so a damp towel keeps drying inside it instead of sitting in a sealed plastic bag and going sour. Still, get it out and hang it up when you get home. A machine wash on cold every few uses keeps it fresh, and skip the fabric softener because it coats the fibres and the towel stops absorbing water properly.

Why two towels in one pack?

Because one is never enough. One goes around your neck and stays there, and the second one is for your head, for wiping your face and your sunglasses, or for the person next to you who did not bring one. On a coach boat or in a race committee boat there are always more people than towels. Two towels also means one can be drying while the other one is on you.
