The Windie Marine Monocular does the job of three instruments without asking for a second hand. Look through it and you get eight times magnification, a compass bearing along the bottom of your view, and a scale that turns any object of known height into a distance. FAQ

Is the Windie Marine Monocular waterproof?

Yes. It is sealed and rubber armoured for marine use, so rain, spray and a dunking are all fine. Dry the eyepiece and the front lens before you look through it, or you will just be looking at water drops. After a day on salt water, rinse the body with fresh water and dry it.

What is better on a boat, a monocular or binoculars?

A monocular leaves you a hand free, weighs about half as much, and there are no two barrels to line up with your eyes while the deck is moving. Binoculars give a more relaxed view for long watches, so if you are scanning the horizon for an hour they win. For grabbing a quick look, a bearing or a distance while you are steering, the monocular is the one you will actually pick up.

How does the rangefinder work without batteries?

It is a scale etched into the optics, not electronics. Every number on the scale is 10 mils, and one mil covers one metre at a thousand metres. Count how many numbers an object fills, then divide its real height in metres by that number of mils and you have the distance in kilometres. A 30 m lighthouse filling 60 mils is 0.5 km away. It is an estimate rather than a laser measurement, but nothing can run out of charge.

Can I use the monocular with glasses on?

Yes, and you should. Fold the rubber eyecup down and your glasses sit where the eyecup was. There is 18 mm of eye relief, which is generous, so you still see the whole picture. If you are short sighted, keep your glasses on, because without them the monocular may not focus properly on things far away.
